Besides the snow, there aren’t too many obvious choices for family getaway’s in the winter – unless you’re escaping the cold and heading north that is!
But winter can actually be a great time to get away and see some of your favourite or new destinations in another light. The wildlife, scenery and local flora are all different, you avoid the crowds, and there’s something about a roaring open fire that adds a special something to a break from home if you ask me!
We love a good road trip in our family during the cooler months, particularly for short stays over a weekend to avoid cabin fever at home. Do you have favourite destination?
Whether it’s breathing in the salty mist and watching the waves crash at the beach, or strolling through the gold and orange leaves of the countryside, don’t be afraid to get out and about this winter as you’ll be surprised at what you discover – just take extra clothes! Here’s one of our team member’s favourite hotspots and a new website that might make things easier for you too.
Make the most of your car
Our advertising mumma, Bridget visited SA’s Kangaroo Island with the family recently and had rave reviews from their stay. Often mistaken as a romantic destination for couples with long walks, great wine and local produce (heaven), KI’s natural landscape and wildlife is actually a kid’s idea of paradise too! Getting outdoors and experiencing fishing, whale watching (with Southern Right Whales migrating at this time of year), seal spotting and nocturnal animal tours at the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is great fun for all ages, and often best experienced in the cooler months as the animals seem to come out of hiding and have a little more energy.
For those needing a little more adventure, a great range of sports including quad biking and sandboarding with Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action, and kayaking on the Harriet River can also be enjoyed at this time of the year.
At the end of a day of sight seeing, there is of course that great wine and local produce to look forward to next to an open fire after the kids go to bed!
Kangaroo Island is a comfortable 45 minute ferry ride from Cape Jervis (1.5 hours from Adelaide), making a road trip with the family a breeze, or a 30 minute flight from Adelaide airport. SeaLink ferries also have a KIDS TRAVEL FREE promotion for travel until 31st August, 2017. While children aged under 3 always travel free to Kangaroo Island, up to two children aged 3 to 14 years can travel free on SeaLink ferries until the end of August when accompanied by one or two paying adults and a vehicle – saving you up to $100. Just visit www.sealink.com.au/kidsgofree to make your booking.
During the cooler months you can also take advantage of the many great accommodation deals on the island, with a range of accommodation providers offering 3 nights for the price of 2, when booking your stay with SeaLink.

Packing for a road trip made easy
Packing for holidays, particularly when the kids are little and still require a porta cot, stroller, car seats and high chairs can sometimes be all too hard. But thanks to clever parents Eva and Tom from Tree Hut Village, hiring these essential items from local parents at your destination is now super easy, and really affordable.
Tree Hut Village is an Australian parent-to-parent community that provides a secure and reliable way to lend and borrow baby equipment from other parents. Connecting parents Australia-wide to make hiring safe, high-quality baby equipment more accessible for everyone, you can search, hire and collect (or have delivered) the items you require, leaving you an empty boot to pack everything else you’ll need for your mini getaway.
Tree Hut Village is also handy for when friends and family come to visit if you no longer have the items at home or they are already being used by your own kids.
Whilst you’re away on your trip, why not become a mini entrepreneur and earn some extra cash from your own items that aren’t being used? Tree Hut Village allows you to list your items, approve which bookings you take, and be paid for the hire of these big ticket items you may not have a use for and simply can’t throw away.
Check out their website at www.treehutvillage.com.au for more details and be sure to register to go in the draw for your chance to WIN a BabyZen YoYo travel stroller – perfect to use for yourself or add to your listings! Anyone who books an item gets an additional 5 entries and anyone who lists an item gets another 2 entries.
